The process of giving birth is a vulnerable part of the mother’s as well as the newborn’s life. There are several dangers associated with delivery. Proper precautions are necessary to prevent the baby from bacterial exposure or other birth injuries.

If exposed to dangerous bacteria right after birth, they will have to face life-threatening issues. Even mothers can spread harmful infections to the child, which can have long-term effects on the newborn’s health. Legally, you can file for compensation under the personal injury law if you or your baby suffers from birth injuries.

However, you can protect the newborn by following the tips given below!

  • All the healthcare professionals involved in the delivery must wear clean gowns. They should use hygienic and fresh gloves while handling the patient. The doctors responsible for delivering the baby must avoid juggling multiple patients and make sure they are clean before being near the newborn.
  • Sanitize all the equipment thoroughly. Sterilized forceps, vacuums, scalpels, etc., must be used in the delivery. You must make them before the delivery takes place.
  • Antiseptic should be mandatory for the umbilical cord. Doing so helps in the prevention of cord infection and promotes the safety of the child as well as the mother.
  • After the body temperature of the newborn baby becomes stable, the baby must be washed off to remove the remaining placenta and other bodily fluids. The baby must be properly cleansed and dried off to avoid any risk of infection.
  • Remove any excess fluid present in the baby’s nose, mouth, or throat immediately.
  • Use eye drops and ointments to protect the baby from other infection issues. It will also help in preventing infections.
  • If the baby is born through the cesarean section method, you should take extra care for their safety. Additionally, you should clean the baby thoroughly after delivery to ensure they are not prone to bacterial exposure near the incision’s location.

Common symptoms of infection

If you observe that the baby is experiencing trouble breathing or getting fed, inform your doctor and get your child tested. Also, if your child is restless, has fluctuating body temperatures, rashes on the skin, or has discoloration, it may be a sign that they have contracted bacteria and need medical treatment immediately. Unusually irritable children who persistently cry can also struggle with a bacterial infection. Make sure to notice any changes in your newborn’s behavior and seek professional help if needed.
